Beginning in May, XM's liberal talk channel, America Left (XM Channel 167) will be renamed Air America Radio. So does this mean that Air America will cease to be on Sirius?

I was wondering the same thing. It kind of sounds that way, but it doesn't say "exclusive" anywhere, just "official."

The only way it could be dropped from Sirius is if Air America decided to drop it. XM and Sirius have restrictions on creating exclusive deals and this would likely fall under that restriction.

Really? Like NASCAR, or MLB?

"XM was a natural fit to be the official satellite radio network of Air America Radio, given its large subscriber base, numerous distribution channels and demonstrated growth," said Danny Goldberg, CEO of Air America Radio. "The quality of XM's other partnerships, their Washington, D.C. location and proximity to the center of our nation's political workings, along with millions of subscribers, made our decision easy."

Sounds exclusive to me, whether they call it that or not.

Oh, by the way, someone tell that New York magazine.... the one that said XM is lame because they cater to middle America with NASCAR and Sirius is all hip to NYC because of Air America.....

I don't see exclusive anywhere... methinks it just means XM told Air America they will only have the full lineup if they become the 'official' carrier....

We'll see....That quote up there certainly doesn't sound like it's staying neutral.

OK, I'll bet you a big bag of dog hair that when XM becomes the Official Satellite Radio of Air America, Air America will not be heard on Sirius.

Deal?

It could also mean that Sirius can't call its channel "Air America Radio" anymore, even though they carry all of the content.

If it stays on SIRI, maybe Air America will start saying stuff like "XM is our official Satellite Carrier" and every SIRI sub will hear it. Then SIRI will drop it.

XM, Air America Strengthen Ties
April 11, 2005
By Ken Tucker

Beginning in May, XM Satellite Radio's liberal talk stream, America Left, will be renamed Air America Radio as part of a new agreement with the left-leaning network. Air America programming has been part of XM's lineup almost from the start of Air America's life, just over a year ago. The agreement also names XM as “the official satellite radio network” for Air America Radio. What that means for Sirius Satellite Radio, which also carries Air America programming, is unclear at this time.

Interestingly, in addition to the Air America programming lineup, the channel will also feature Democracy Radio’s "The Ed Schultz Show" and Fox News Radio’s "The Alan Colmes Show."

"XM was a natural fit to be the official satellite radio network of Air America Radio, given its large subscriber base, numerous distribution channels and demonstrated growth," Air America CEO Danny Goldberg said in a statement. "The quality of XM's other partnerships, their Washington, D.C. location and proximity to the center of our nation's political workings, along with millions of subscribers, made our decision easy."

In addition to the rebranding, XM's Washington, D.C., headquarters will offer dedicated studio space for live broadcasts throughout the year for Air America Radio programs.

Subject: Is this deal exclusive?

Ms. Griffith,

I was wondering if this deal was exclusive with XM Radio and meant that Sirius would no longer be allowed to carry the Air America Network. If it is, I would be able to help draw many new people over to XM due to Air America's presence only on XM instead of both SDAR's services. Thank you in advanced!

Best Regards,

Joshua M. Jenkins

Air America Signs With XM Satellite Radio
April 11, 2005
By Katy Bachman

XM Satellite Radio announced Monday it has signed a multi-year content agreement with Air America Radio, making XM the exclusive satellite radio network for the left-leaning radio network. Financial terms were not disclosed.

When the deal begins in May, Air America Radio will no longer air on Sirius Satellite Radio, which has 1.2 million subscribers to XM's nearly 3.8 million.

As part of the agreement, XM's America Left channel will be renamed Air America Radio and include the expanded lineup of AAR programming -including Jerry Springer, Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow and Janeane Garofalo. The channel will also include other programming not associated with AAR that currently airs on America Left, such as The Ed Schultz Show, syndicated by Democracy Radio and Jones Radio Networks, and The Alan Colmes Show, syndicated by Fox News Radio.

Based in Washington, D.C., XM also will offer dedicated studio space for special live broadcasts of Air America Radio programs.

Given Air America's troubles , XM probably got a good deal for it. Or possibly, Air America paid XM instead.

Since these things come in threes, what's the third (AOL, Air America, ?)

I wonder how much content will flip flop between XM and Sirius (Nascar, Air America)

Why in the world are they calling it Air America Radio if we still get Alan Colmes (Fox News' liberal whipping post) instead of the award winning Mike Malloy. Colmes is probably a nice guy, but he panders to the Fox listener base and I just don't need another interview with a Regnery author.

I have written XM directly about this problem. Why they don't respond to their liberal listeners is beyond me. Why we don't get all of Air America (plus the very fine Ed Schultz on another channel or during one of the Air America repeated shows) is also beyond me. This seems to be nothing but a name change and not worth the ink it is printed in.
