Delphi Introduces XM Personal Repeater at CES
Delphi Expands Satellite Radio Product Line-Up by Introducing Delphi XM Signal Repeater
Provides XM Reception Wirelessly Throughout the Home and Office to Multiple Delphi Receivers
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Corp. (NYSE:DPH), America's leading satellite radio manufacturer with nearly 4.5 million receivers sold, announced today that it is expanding its satellite radio product line-up with the introduction of the Delphi XM Signal Repeater -- the first system that wirelessly rebroadcasts the XM satellite signal throughout most homes and smaller offices.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020315/DEF002LOGO )
Innovatively designed, the repeater system includes both a transmitter and receive module. The transmitter down-converts the XM signal through the XM home or audio system antenna and rebroadcasts it through interior walls and floors at an expected distance between 75 and 100 feet. While in range, one or more receive modules can acquire and up-convert the signal back to the natural XM frequency -- passing it through just like a typical XM antenna. The end result is continues XM programming wirelessly throughout an indoor environment.
"The Delphi XM Signal Repeater eliminates the need for long and unsightly antenna extensions," said Joseph A. Damato, director consumer electronics, Delphi Product & Service Solutions. "In addition, it offers multiple radio environments the ability to share the same XM antenna and signal. As a result of this enabling technology, Delphi expects the application of indoor satellite radio to grow to new levels in the coming years." The Repeater system's sleek design allows for an attractive integration with the home or office environment and is compatible with Delphi's complete line-up of satellite radio receivers.
The Delphi XM Signal Repeater will debut at major consumer electronics stores this spring, at an expected retail price of $169 for the complete system and $69 for each additional receive module.
Delphi has sold more than 4 million satellite radio receivers including both OE and retail units. Delphi was the first company to integrate a radio into the dashboard in 1936, the first to bring satellite radio to the vehicle in 2001 and the first to bring a portable satellite radio boombox to the market in 2002. Delphi has a broad portfolio of products to answer a wide variety of information and entertainment needs. For more information about Delphi, visit http://www.delphi.com/media.
Note: Satellite reception depends on the ability of the antenna to receive a signal. The signal may not be available in buildings or if obstructed (e.g. by mountains, trees, bridges, etc.)

Cool little device, looks like a WiFi access point. The antennas are about the size of the current XM Home Antenna.
I have heard this product could have been avilable earlier, but there are still some FCC issues to iron out. There was a little note attcahed under each transmitter station on display that said this product is still pending FCC approval. Whatever the reason, Delphi seems confident that they will have podcut in the spring.

I'm confused - Ziggy - can you help?
So the larger item is connected to a regular antenna. That gets the signa;l from the satellite?
And then you take the smaller antenna in the pic, replace your regular antenna with that one...and that picks up the personal repeater signal?

Sorry, I think Delphi missed the boat on this product!
When I first saw this thread I was excited but by the time I got to the end I realized that this was not a whole house XM signal re-broadcaster like they have a Circuit City. It is a plain old transmitter/receiver. Shitty signal in shitty signal out
At a Circuit City they receive the XM signal, amplify and rebroadcast it throughout the store so that ANY XM receiver in the store can receive XM. With this unit you have to have the little receiver plugged into the antenna jack on the XM receiver to get the signal from the transmitter.
Therefore, unless you purchase more receiver boxes, you only get one signal for one XM unit. It would of been much cooler to have a whole house XM amplified transmitter where everyone in the house or in the back yard could listen to their own XM unit. Sorry, I can't use this...

Any idea who makes the rebroadcaster for Circuit City. If I could get my hands on one I would buy one of those for my house. As for the Delphi transmitter, I think Ill pass. I have a MyFi and the reason why I would want one is so that I can roam the house without carrying an antenna with me. The last thing I want is more wires to carry with me.

Baby steps. Think first generation of personal repeaters. This stuff doesn't happen overnight. I think there will be people who find this useful.

My guess is that it uses some kind of different frequency range between the transmitter and the receivers, and that's why it works that way. If Ziggy doesn't, I will do my best to see if I can get any technical info on the device today...

For me, this device is perfect. I live in an apartment where I DO have a southern view from the back patio.
But my XM receiver is in the living room which is on the other side. So this is a great alternative of using a 50ft extention and somehow trying to hide it... So I will be buying one.
I don't see how it is technically possible to have a repeater that receives and transmitts on the same channel... Like what Bankdude is talking about...

I agree - its a step in the right direction but not a perfect solution. I would like to see a repeater that could be put in the gym so I could use my MiFi without any additional wires.

I "assume" the Circuit City repeater is just a low power signal repeater that re-broadcasts the XM signal it receives, throughout their store. The car audio guys said that it helps them with their XM installs as they would not normally get a strong enough signal in their work bay. I do not know who makes it.
Until MikeV gets the exact specs, I "assume" the new Delphi antenna unit is like a 900Mhz + frequency range, low power, transmitter/receiver system. I have something similar which takes the output from my computer's sound card and transmits it across my house to the matched receiver in my living room, so that I can hear my MP3 collection through my home stereo.

I doubt it is 900MHz - that is one damn crowded frequency range now. The 2.4 GHz range is more likely - it is what is uses in 802.11b/g so the chipsets are off-the-shelf. It could also be a 5.8 GHz (which I think is the 802.11a frequency) but that frequency has a hell of a time punching through walls...
