XM online works under Linux

I already had my Linux computer set up for listening to SIRIUS online, and it also works without modification for XMRO.

I haven't confirmed that all features work, but I can listen, change channels, and use the "What's On" tab. There is an empty box at the top of the player, in the middle of the window, and the upper right window that describes the connection status is awkwardly displayed. Presumably those places use some ActiveX content, which I don't have Firefox set up to handle. I see something very similar with the SIRIUS online player.

I'm using Firefox 1.0.1 with mplayerplug-in , which uses mplayer to handle WMP (and other) content. I have mplayerplug-in 2.70 and mplayer 1.0pre5-3.2.2, under Redhat 9.0. I had to switch to the high bandwidth stream before it would work.

These components require some know-how in building and/or installing software under Linux, which aren't necessarily trivial. Good luck!

Warning: this isn't the most stable setup. If I change channels a lot and click on lots of buttons in rapid succession, I find that Firefox sometimes crashes. However, I tend to leave it on one channel, only switching occasionally, and I rarely have crashes that way. The stability has improved with each release of the plugin.

Presets seem to work too.

What version of Linux are you using?

Tried it on Fedora Core 3:
mplayer-1.0-0.15.pre6a.1.fc3.rf
mplayerplug-in-2.80-1.FC3.i386.rpm
firefox 1.0.1
Shockwave Flash 7.0 r25

works like a charm.. this is great since that last xm interface (before the change over) didn't allow Firefox to login.

that's really cool... i'm wondering about the box at the top..

there are 2 flash movies near the top of the player - one for displaying the current channel info, and one under that which has a strip of preset logos -

would you try installing flash player 6 (or 7 if you can get it) and test it out then?

as long as you have mplayer set up for the streaming part, i think all of the other parts would work as it's just javascript/flash content.

I have flash 6.0 and the two sections of flash content you mention work just fine. The boxes I'm talking about overlay the flash content.

I just configured my laptop to have XMRO work in the Knoppix environment using Firefox and MPlayer plugin. The graphics aren't perfect but the presets do work and as a bonus I get far fewer buffereing problems than listening using WMP and XP.

Linux rules.

I've got it running just fine on Ubuntu on my laptop. Pretty sweet! But I have a partition saved for WinXP, and it's a LOT less "klunky" in Windows.

BTW, is anyone working on a Linux port of XaMpd or XstreaXM?

I am REALLY tired of running the browser to listen to XMRO. It chews up memory and is "very clunky."

I am in the process of writing a Qt and OpenDA stand alone player. I am being very careful make sure this is cross platform and SKINNY SKINNY SKINNY!

I am a senior in college and strapped for time right now, but once the Xmas break hits I should have the first version rolled out and into the streams.

I am primarily doing this for Linux and Mac users, but it will work in Windows too.

I am also making sure it has the smallest footprint possible, so it won't be flashy, just VERY lean on the memory and CPU requirements and cross platform.

I will keep you guys updated.... Smile

I can't speak for XaMp, but there will never be a Linux port of XstreamXM.
