Roady 2 Review - Now Available!
Now shipping: http://www.myradiostore.us/xm-radio-receivers/
Recently, plenty of rumors have been circling about what new hardware will be released for XM
Satellite Radio from Delphi. Today, we can finally put all the speculation to rest. Introducing
the all-new Roady Version 2, or Roady “Lite”, as some have dubbed it, model SA10085.
This new receiver is unchanged on the front face as well as the three connections on the side
for power, audio output, and antenna. As in the current Roady version, the screen colors,
presets, and all other functions remain unaffected. Without turning the unit on, the biggest
difference is size and weight. The Roady Lite is less than 3/4" thick, and weighs in at just
over 3 ounces, making it by far the smallest and lightest satellite radio receiver.
Aside form the reduced size, the next big thing from XM is the ability to receive and display up
to 20 stock quotes. This feature is powered by Comstock, Inc.
Press the menu button, and select the Stock Ticker option. This will allow you to add or erase
stock symbols from your list. The stock ticker symbols are stored in the Roady, so selecting
your favorites is pretty easy with the tuning wheel. As you select the first letter, the choices
for the next letter are limited to only existing stock symbols and so on. Once you are done, the
ticker will scroll constantly across the lower display line of your Roady in alphabetical order
under the currently playing artist name. This is a fourth display mode adding to the three
previous ones that displayed combinations of the channel name/number and artists/song title.
Next on the list of goodies is a built-in wireless FM modulator (or transmitter). Thsi will
allow you to use the Roady in any vehicle with an FM radio. Just plug in the cigarette lighter
for power, toss the antenna on the roof, and you are Rockin' to with XM!
This makes listening to XM in any vehicle quick and effortless. Go into the menu and select from
any of the 12 FM frequencies from 88.1-88.9 and 106.7-107.9 FM. You can even adjust the level of
the FM sound so as not to overdrive your FM receiver. Sound quality is great for a wireless FM
modulator. Unless you are listening to the softest of classical pieces, you will not notice any
background noise. I was able to achieve about a 10 foot range with good sound quality from my
unit in the very crowded airwaves of New York City. Clearly this will work better outside such
overpopulated areas.
A welcome addition to the menu selections is a simple Antenna Aiming screen similar to the one
the Skyfi has. This shows you the signal levels that you are receiving from the Satellite and/or
Terrestrial ground repeaters and the relative strength.
Internally, you can clearly see that this is the next generation chipset driving this unit. The
"metal can" has been replaced by what looks like a few chips mounted directly onto the circuit
board. Through the use of this new chipset, power consumption has been reduce by about 30%.
Although this Roady still feels quite warm to the touch after extended operation in a few spots,
I think its more due to the chips being more exposed without the larger metal can to dissipate
the heat throughout the whole unit. Just to note, heat has never been a factor in XM Radio
operation. This continues to be the case here.
The FM modulator antenna is also easily recognized in the unit.
One last item worth noting is that in the hidden 2-0-7-XM menu, the BER% screen used by most of
us “techies” to get the perfect sweet spots for our home antennas and to see how well the signal
comes into our moving vehicle antenna, has been moved to the first and second positions after
pressing the display button. This makes it easier and much faster to access this valuable
information.
XM and Delphi just keep coming up with excellent designs and features for their receivers. What
more can be said? The new Roady should start appearing on store shelves in the next 1-2 months
around the country.

Very cool. I can't wait to see what the next SkyFi is going to have compared to the current one. Any guess if we might see a similar review about SkyFi 2 in the coming months?

Nice, but it appears that longer data fields haven't been implemented.

EXCLUSIVE ROADY 2 REVIEW
Very Nice Pictures.
Thanks for the review. _________________ Some people have written to me asking me if I would be for the merger. If they added a broadcast for anime, J-Pop, K-Pop, and video game music and or 48K or better SQ.
I say YES! But I doubt it will happen. Please prove me wrong XMSIRI.

Sweet!
It's lighter, but that won't help the connections. Once it is mounted who cares how light it is. The reductiion of a few oz. does not outweigh the limited life span of the power, audio and antena connections in my mind.
- more portable, but still just as fragile as the origional! _________________ PWMT

Am I the only person who thinks that displaying scrolling stock quotes in a car is an
extremely
bad idea?

FM modulation quality
Is the built in FM modulator better than the cigarette adapter currently offered? _________________ http://www.turbulenceforecast.com - flying? check the turbulence forecast

Stock quotes are certainly a BADDDD Idea! I would hate to share the road with an 18 wheeler who just got the news that his stock went DOOOWWWWNNN. That takes his eyes of the road to get the news, and his brain off of driving while he recovers from the shock.
NOT GOOD!!
Guess I keep my SkyFi for a while longer.
But it was a really great review from Ziggie the Reliable. Thanks.
