60's - Dave The Rave's Relics & Rarities (WTF?)

Heres a copy of what I e-mailed XM 60's channel this morning...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Howdy, just a e-mail to both praise Xm and complain..

I have had XM for a few years now and love it... Particularly the 60's channel... I got lured in by Phlash & Terry's CQ-USA shows and have stayed loyal thanx to quality programming like Dave the Rave's Relics and Rarities show... I guess the reason is that both shows have an air of surprise to "what they are going to play next?"... Honestly, Im not all that interested in hearing the same old things that FM Oldies stations play over and over... I'll admit that those are the only three XM/60's shows I regularly listen to (altho I am missing Terry's CQ show more & more thanx to getting home later (and only getting thru on the phone "once" in the years I've been listening has kinda made me doubt how random the show really is))..

I have multiple subscriptions to both XM & Sirius... Other than Xm's 60's channel and Xm's Cinemagic (and a few streams on Sirus), they are both pretty much the same... (which means they both outperform FM by far)... XM 60's is much better than the Sirius 60's thanx to shows like Relics & Rarities and CQ-USA and even tho it costs more to have both, it is definitely worth it...

Theres the praise, now heres the complaint...

I have been listening to Dave the Rave's show since the beginning (and even before on a local NJ station) and have loved every minute of it... Until the last few weeks that is... I have heard the same shows being played weekend after weekend!! Adding to my frustration is that I can only catch the Saturday 8am show due to my schedule... This weekend in particular is more frustrating in that I went to bed late and had to set my alarm to listen to the show - only to find that it was a repeat... Of course now I cant go back to sleep and it was a waste of time... Will i tune in next week?? Of course - I love Dave's show... But would I bother it if I didnt love the show? Hell no...

Bottom line is please get your act together with Dave's show... I sacrifice rare chances to sleep late in order to hear Relics & Rarities (and it is absolutely worth it), but on mornings like this it is very frustrating to hear LAST WEEKS show again!!!

Double WTF!!!

Just got an e-mail back from PHlash Phelps saying:

quote:

Dave didn't give us a new show...I've been away and no one here added the show from the 8th so we ran that one again.
Well, the show is cancelled after the end of the month due to sound quality and complaints of no pad data. So the final show will be on next week.

Suddenly hearing a repeat of Dave's show is not that important anymore... Why on earth would they shelve a show like Dave's??? Its a one-hour a week specialty show that I'm betting isnt very expensive... And from what I've seen on the web, it seems to have a solid and loyal audience...

Sound quality??????? When has radio become more about sound quality than about programming quality?? For the record, Dave's show sounds fine.. 95% of the listening population couldnt tell the difference between Dave's show and the rest of whats being played on XM normally...

This sucks... A show I actually get up early to listen to is cancelled, while they start playing this Doctor Demento crap all over the place...

Although I am more of a 70s music listener, I have caught a few of Dave the Rave's shows and enjoyed them very much. I am sorry to hear that the show is leaving.

To be fair, I was listening one week and DTR played a couple of songs in a row where the quality was so bad it wasn't listenable - bad song selection on his part with all the clean copies of obscure stuff he has. I'm not talking just snap, crackle, pop either - I mean badly cue-burned AND distorted. I cringed when I heard it, and I can only imagine what somebody who might have been listening to XM for the first time might have thought.

Obviously, that's something that could have been addressed, and who knows, maybe the attempt was made to do so.

Regardless, for anybody at XM who may read this, I'm sorry to see the show go.

The reason some of the songs sounded poorly was because they were coming from the actual 45's and Dave probably did not have ones that sounded better. Most of these songs are not found on any CD's. I agree that the sound quality was kind of poor at times but the fact that these songs were even played was amazing.

I'll miss Dave the Rave. He had a great show. I hope something like this will return one day.

I realize that re: the actual 45's. My point (badly made) was that the quality of the ones I was referring to was SO bad as to not be air-worthy even given the limitations of old 45's. There comes a time when the quality (or lack thereof) has to be weighed against the question of "is this even worth playing?"

I agree the fact that DTR has all those records IS nothing short of incredible. Hopefully we'll hear some of these songs from time to time on 60's on 6 much as "Hang 6" features surf music, "Bangers And Mash" features songs from across the pond, "Gumball" features bubblegum music and so forth.

Hello to XM: Regarding Dave The Rave's Relics & Rarities Program!
I have heard that XM is planning to cancel Dave The Rave's show!!! What kind of nonsense is this. Finally get a cool channel to hear different things for an hour, and it appears XM is going to ruin this. This is a shame! I guess it shows no matter what type of Radio you deal with there are just a bunch of Idiots making programming decisions, who know nothing of music or records or anything relevant to interesting shows like these. Golly Gee, let's play the same old Top 5 hits over & over for the Brain Dead Listeners! Why not just be Clear Channel or some other Robot network & keep the Radio IQ as low as possible. This is a horrible decision and I sincerely hope you reconsider.

Ken

Bad move XM...this sort of programming is what made XM/60s on 6 a notch above regular radio and Sirius 60s Vibe, disappointing to say the least!! Sad

The poor sound quality for one show a week is a non-issue. Remember, 60's on 6 is over compressed (to conserve bandwith for other stations I guess) to start with so even when a newly remastered CD is played, the sound quality is lower than that of the 70's channel for example.

I can understand compessing channels 4, 5, and Hanks due to source quality limitations but there is a lot of high quality 60's music available. It doesn't make sense to spend all the money on production for this channel and then skimp on bandwidth.

Oh well.

I was outraged to hear that Dave the Rave's show was cancelled. It was a wonderful show and I enjoyed it so much. Please reconsider cancelling this show. It is definitely a bad move and I'm afraid you might lose listeners. Dave's show was the best thing on XM '60s. Where else can we hear the great, obscure oldies? I hope to hear soon Crying or Very sad that his show will continue.

Dammit, dammit, dammit. It's like Special X all over again. Mad

Well, I've done my part and sent a polite but candid email to Cleve Wheeler and Lee Abrams expressing my displeasure at the decision, and urging them to reconsider. I guess that's all any of us can do.

I sent a letter this morning, and Phlash responded within an hour or two. Here's what he said:

"Dave's not being cancelled, he was given the opportunity to move to a feature but I understand has declined.
Sorry to say he doesn't want to do it and be on the channel. "

So "cancellation" may not be the right word here. Regardless, his days on XM are nearly at an end. I hope he turns up someplace else -- perhaps a Webcast, or maybe even Sirius (don't think he fits their format over there, though).

He is already on a webcast: www.topshelfoldies.com every Saturday night. Check out www.davetherave.com for more info.

BTW - I spoke with Dave live on the air last Saturday night. He did not decline anything! He says he still might be on a feature of a couple of songs a day. Something like highlighting a rare oldie or something like their "features" they have on from time-to-time. He was disappointed with the fact he was dropped from XM and asked that we all send an email to Clev Wheeler and let him know our "opinions!" I agree with another post, that we should not cuss or make threats. They are only doing their job.

Going from a one hour show to a two-songs every couple of days is a major letdown.... No publicity, no show, im sure a big cut in pay...

Why should he do it? Yeah he'd be on the air, but unless you listen to the channel religiously, you'd never be able to find out when he's gonna be on...

The real reason why not to cuss or make threats is that the sender would be immediately labeled a crackpot, and not be taken seriously... Be mad, but be polite and theres a chance they'll listen...
